some notes:

Habeas Corpus began as The Insistent Body, a manila folder I began sorting in 1987. Or maybe as a shelf of books about bodies. I received a Film in the Cites grant and thought I'd make a video called Such Stuff Studies. Sometime in the early 90's, some of my family members began telling me I could not use my name, Mark McCusker, when performing and presenting my work so I chose Habeas Corpus as a pseudonym.

I meet Darrell Taylor in 1997. We began collaborating, fell in love, and were married. Darrell Co-directed Habeas Corpus until spring 2007. Darrell directs UNI's gallery of art in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

My work is centered on the human body, it use and misuse, how it is represented, by whom and why.

I investigate issues of autonomy/authority, choice/control, obedience, and resistance.

I 'm intrigued by the Cartesian mind/body “split” and making the spirit flesh.

In the past, my personal doctrine has been to peacefully coexist with artists of opposing viewpoints, telling myself, "no aesthetic cleansing." I continue to attempt this doctrine.

I perform, tour, exhibit, and facilitate workshops in movement and body issues, blending forms and integrating disparate elements into unified wholes.

My past work's been funded in part with grants from the NEA, the American Film Institute, the Jerome Foundation, the Iowa Arts Council, and others.
